Hello students and welcome to an action packed journey.

The activities and tasks allocated to you on this site will be explained in depth within class time.

This site will direct you on a learning adventure. 

In your group of 5 you will be given tasks to do along the way.
You will need to assign the following individual roles:

Research Scientist, Assistant research scientist, Secretary, Nutritionist and Dietician.

As part of your assessment for this unit you will be required to:

1. Design and present a coded menu to our P&C president and tuck-shop convener.
2. Develop an online survey.
   
   
3. Complete an online multiple choice quiz.
   
   
4. Group power point presentation.

Food influences so many parts of our lives. Apart from eating to maintain and give our body and brain the nourishment and nutrition it needs; food is the essence of life itself. It is celebrated in many forms, from social and family gatherings, business and corporate occasions; weddings, births and funerals. Individuals eat when they are happy and they also eat when they are sad. Historical and religious events are or can be celebrated with food.

Food gives us the energy and nutrients the body needs to maintain health and life, to grow and develop, to move, work, play, think and learn

The body needs a variety of nutrients - proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals - and these come from the foods we eat.  
Proteins are needed to build and maintain muscle, blood, skin and bones and other tissues and organs in the body.
Carbohydrates and fats mainly provide energy, although some fats are also needed as building materials and to help the body use certain vitamins.
Vitamins and minerals are needed in smaller amounts than protein, fat and carbohydrates, but they are essential for good nutrition. They help the body work properly and stay healthy. Some minerals also make up part of the body's tissues, for example, calcium and fluoride are found in bones and teeth and iron is found in the blood.
Fibre (or roughage) and clean water are also needed for a good diet.  

All foods contain nutrients but different foods contain different amounts of various nutrients.  

Foods rich in proteins are all types of meat, poultry, fish, beans, peas, soybeans, groundnuts, milk, cheese, yoghurt and eggs.
Foods rich in carbohydrates are rice, maize, wheat and other cereals, all types of potatoes, yams and starchy roots and sugars.
Foods rich in fats are oils, some meat and meat products, lard, butter, ghee and some other milk products, margarine, some types of fish, nuts and soybeans.
Foods rich in vitamin A are dark-green vegetables, carrots, dark-yellow sweet potato, pumpkin, mango, papaya, eggs and liver.
Foods rich in B vitamins are dark-green vegetables, groundnuts, beans, peas, cereals, meat, fish and eggs.
Foods rich in vitamin C are fruits and most vegetables, including potatoes.
Foods rich in iron are meat, fish, groundnuts, beans, peas, dark-green leafy vegetables and dried fruits.

Relate

Your school P&C needs you, in the past we have lost patrons and therefore business due to the ineffectiveness of our menu items available to customers. In eight weeks time we will be hosting a dinner function; at this function will be individuals who suffer with various forms of food intolerance's/allergies, or medical conditions requiring special dietary requirements. With your help you will need to design a menu that not only will cater for our multicultural society of today but also be inclusive of the many other forms of food items suitable for a range of other issues. It is hoped that from this experience that a list will be compiled of these recipes so they can be added to our school tuck shop.

Duties can include: Manage the day-to-day activities and administration associated with research project.

Liaise with key stakeholders to set time lines and ensure documentation and research activities are completed with agreed time frames.

Work with the research team to develop and organize data collection processes.

Conduct on-site interviews with study participants.

Transcribe and analyse interviews.

Assist in the development of survey instruments and other data collection tools.

Assist with the preparation and delivery of project presentations and workshops.

Assist with the production of reports.

Food Allergies
BACKGROUND

Allergy and Intolerances
Some people are sensitive to particular foods like nuts, shellfish and cereals. The symptoms of food allergy can include breathing problems, stomach upsets and skin rashes. They are caused by an immune system response or a chemical reaction in the body. Some severe food allergies can be life threatening. Professional diagnosis is important, because other medical conditions may share the same symptoms. Most reactions to food are actually food intolerance. About one in 20 children and one in 100 adults have food allergies.

What is 'food intolerance'? Food intolerance can be a difficult concept to understand. Sometimes individuals can have similar symptoms to those with allergies. To find out more about it visit this site.

Below are some important sites for you to explore and define the issues at hand for certain individuals and their dietary requirements.

In your group roles explore and research these sites taking notes as required, do not forget to retrieve references as you go.

Your group need to create an online survey using the following site. This survey will need to ask questions of its participants relating to food intolerance’s/allergies, or if they have any special diets pertaining to medical conditions On line survey.

After you have explored these sites make a group posting of what areas need to be considered when planning for menus.
The surveys will be distributed to the school community via the office, the results of these will determine what recipes you will be able to use.

Design a code system for your menu highlighting to customers what foods are suitable to eat for certain issues, eg. Gluten (G).

Brainstorm  and post your ideas. A final decision will be made as a whole class within school time.

With all of the data you have collated it is now time to create your menu for the end of year school function.
This menu must follow the guidelines of healthy, multicultural and be inclusive of all issues and dietary requirements of people with special considerations.

This menu must also have the code system allocated to it. The end result will be presented to the P&C President and convener of the school tuck-shop.

 

Create and donate

Creation of your group power point presentation.

This task involves making a power point presentation as a group project. The following sites have some tools you may be interested in to help you make a presentation with a difference. Please keep in mind that your slide limit should not exceed 20, this will ensure that all groups have sufficient time to make their presentations in the appropriate time frame.
Your presentation needs to include the following areas. Introduction, middle, end, and have the following subheadings covered.

• Description of issues covered.
  
  
• Foods which can not be eaten by individuals who fall under these categories.
  
  
• Recipes suitable for these groups.
